Plagiocephaly, also known as flat head syndrome, refers to a condition which is characterized by
flattening of the baby’s skull, eithen on one side or the back of the head. Plagiocephaly occurs if the baby lies in the same position for the first few months of life, especially on their back. Premature babies are more likely to have flattened heads. Torticollis, or tight neck muscles, may also contribute to the condition.
Symptoms include flattening of one side of the baby’s head, and having less hair on that side.
Diagnosis is based on the baby’s look and physical examination.
Treatment includes practicing tummy time, varying the baby’s positioning, and holding the baby. If torticolis is diagnosed, physical therapy may be needed.
