Otosclerosis
What is it?
Otosclerosis is an abnormal bone growth in the middle ear, usually around the stapes bone.
As the overgrowth develops, stapes motion is impaired and ossicular vibrations are not effectively transmitted to the inner ear, causing hearing loss.
Signs & symptoms

Additional symptoms may include tinnitus and vertigo.
Diagnosis
diagnosis is based on:
* ear check-up by a specialist to look for any abnormalities
* hearing test
* in some cases, a CT scan may be recommended
Treatment
treatment may include:
* hearing aids
* surgery - In a procedure known as a stapedectomy, a surgeon inserts a prosthetic device into the middle ear to bypass the abnormal bone and permit sound waves to travel to the inner ear
