Osteomalacia, also referred to as soft bones, is when the bones are weak due to lack of Vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency usually occurs due to lack of sunlight exposure, digestive disorders or kidney disorders. Vitamin D participates in building the bones and when there is not enough of it, fractures may occur.
Symptoms include pain, bone fractures, and muscle weakness.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include blood tests for vitamin D levels, X- rays, and bone density evaluation.
Treatment includes vitamin D, calcium or phosphate supplements and getting enough sunlight.
