A disorder characterized by osteochondrosis of the vertebral epiphyses in childhood. Osteochondrosis is a group of disorders that affect bone growth typically in children and adolescents. It is usually caused due to problems in blood supply to the joints which causes pain and disability. Other causes include stress and trauma to the bone. Children who play sports are at the greatest risk for developing osteochondrosis. These diseases are divided into categories, depending on where they occur- articular, non-articular and physeal.

Symptoms of osteochondrosis include swelling, tenderness, joint popping, joint locking, joint weakness, joint stiffness, and inability to fully straighten the affected limb.
Diagnosis includes medical history, physical examination and X-ray.
Treatment includes rest, sometimes casting or bracing the area is suggested, exercise, stretching, and in rare cases surgery may be necessary.
