What is it?

Osteitis deformans (also known as Paget’s disease of bone), is a condition involving changes in the bone cells such as excessive bone breakdown and cellular disorganization. These changes cause the bone to be fragile, resulting in deformities in more than one bone. It is more common in the pelvis, tibia, femur, lumbar vertebrae and skull. The cause for Paget’s is not yet known, but it is probably a combination of genetic and acquired (viral infections) factors. Rarely, Paget’s can transform into a malignant bone disease. It is rare in people under the age of 55. Men are more affected than women.

Signs & symptoms

Osteitis deformans may be asymptomatic in its early stages. Then, symptoms may include pain and bone deformities, If the disease affects the skull symptoms may include frontal bossing, headaches, loss of hearing and rarely even vision loss.

Diagnosis

Osteitis deformans diagnosis usually begins with elevated alkaline phosphatase in the blood.
Then, the disease may be diagnosed by X-ray and bone scans, elevated bone markers such as Pyridinoline, elevated hydroxyproline in blood or urine.

Treatment

There is no cure for osteitis deformans, but medication can relieve bone pain and prevent progression of the disease. Medications may include bisphosphonates and calcitonin. Sometimes surgery may be needed to deal with complications such as fractures, severe degenerative arthritis and deformities.
