by Alike Medical Team ∙ Updated on June 13, 2023
Multiple chemical sensitivity is also known as environmental illness, sick building syndrome, MCS, or idiopathic environmental intolerance. The condition is characterized by high doses of certain chemicals that may trigger different symptoms in different people. In some cases, it is pointed to a major event, like a chemical spill.

Symptoms may include headache, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, congestion, itching, sneezing, sore throat, changes in heart rate, chest pain, breathing problems, muscle pain, stiffness, skin rash, diarrhea, bloating, gas, confusion, trouble concentrating, and mood changes.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. There is no test to diagnose the condition.
There is no effective treatment. Avoiding the triggers may help. Some use antidepressants, anxiety medications, and sleeping pills.
