What is it?


Mucositis refers to an inflammation and ulceration of the mouth and the digestive tract lining. The inflamed membrane may become painful. It is common after going through cancer treatment such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy. In that case, mucositis usually resolves a few weeks after the end of the treatment.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms may include dry mouth, bad breath, painful sores, bleeding, white patches on the tongue, red and swollen gums, diarrhea, constipation, rectal or anal ulcers, abdominal crmaps and bloody stools.

Treatment

Symptoms may be relieved by cold foods, pain relievers, sprays, lozenges, steroids, and anti-sickness medications. Keeping oral hygiene is important.
