Microtia

by Alike Medical Team ∙ Updated on June 13, 2023

General

Microtia is a congenital condition which occurs when the external ear is small and not formed properly. The defect occurs during early pregnancy and varies in its severity. The inner ear, typically, is not affected, making this condition cosmetic. Microtia types range from 1-4, 4 being the most severe type where all external ear structures are missing- called anotia. It could affect one or both ears, one ear is more common. It could be caused due to a mutation in some genes, or due to consumption of a medication called isotretinoin during pregnancy.
