Microtia is a congenital condition which occurs when the external ear is small and not formed properly. The defect occurs during early pregnancy and varies in its severity. The inner ear, typically, is not affected, making this condition cosmetic. Microtia types range from 1-4, 4 being the most severe type where all external ear structures are missing- called anotia. It could affect one or both ears, one ear is more common. It could be caused due to a mutation in some genes, or due to consumption of a medication called isotretinoin during pregnancy.
Microtia is visible at birth on physical examination, further evaluation may include imaging tests of the ear.
Treatment depends on the type or severity of the condition. Surgery may be optional for reconstruction of the outer ear between ages 4-10.
