Microscopic hematuria, or microhematuria, refers to traces of blood in the urine. Miscrohematuria cannot be seen when we pee, and red blood cells are seen only under the microscope. There are many causes of Microscopic hematuria. It could also happen in healthy people after vigorous exercise, menstruation or certain medications. Other causes may include a urinary tract infection, enlarged prostate, kidney or urethral stones, kidney disease, urethral stricture or cancer. Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include blood tests, imaging tests and a biopsy. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include medications such as antibiotics or surgical treatments.
