Malignant neoplasm of brain stem

Brainstem malignant neoplasm refers to brainstem glioma, which is a type of astrocytoma. The brainstem controls functional such as breathing, swallowing, and the heart rate. The gliomas may develop in different parts of the brainstem and thus represent differently. Pons tumors grow rapidly and usually are diagnosed when they are already grade 4 tumor, while medullary tumors grow slowly. It usually diagnosed in children.

Symptoms may include abonrmal eye movements, weakness of one side of the dace, numbness or weakness of the extremities, imbalance, headaches and nausea.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include MRI scan of the brain and a biopsy from the tissue.
Treatment depends on the grade of the tumor. Treatment options include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.
