The urachus is a structure which connects the fetus’s bladder to the umbilical cord during the first trimester of pregnancy. During the thirds trimester, it seals off and becomes the umbilical ligament. A urachal cyst is a sac of fluid which accumulates between the bladder and the umbilicus, which is formed in the fetal remnant of the urachus.
If the urachus does not close up as it normally should,a cyst or a sinus may develop. In most of the cases, people don’t know they have it because it does not cause any symptoms. If it gets infected, it requires medical attention.
