Malaria is a parasite infection, which spreads through bites of infected mosquitos. Malaria is common in tropical and subtropical countries. Those who are infected feel very sick, it usually causes high fever and chills. Malaria disease could have complications such as cerebral malaria when the parasite enters the small blood vessels of the brain and can cause damage. Other complications may include breathing problems, organ failure, anemia, and hypoglycemia.
This group contains additional names:
- Blackwater Fever
- Quartan Malaria
- Falciparum Malaria

- Vivax Malaria
Symptoms may include fever, chills, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, rapid heart rate, rapid breathing, cough, muscle pain and joint pain. Fever could be periodic, with spikes of high fever going down and then up again.
Diagnosis of malaria can be done by blood test to look for the parasite in the blood.
The best way to treat malaria is by preventing it- cover the skin from mosquito bites, apply insect repellent on the skin, and sleep under a net. There are some medications that can be taken to prevent malaria infections. Once diagnosed with malaria, medications like Chloroquine and Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) may be prescribed.
