What is it?

Left upper quadrant abdominal pain may result due to several causes. The organs which are found in the area are the spleen, pancreas, stomach, the left kidney, the colon and the left lung. Causes for left upper quadrant pain may also include heart diseases such as a heart attack, angina and pericarditis. Causes that have to do with the digestion tract include gasses, constipation, heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease, irritable bowel syndrome,and inflammatory bowel disease.Kidney stones may also cause left upper quadrant pain as well as pancreatitis, an enlarged spleen, pneumonia, pleurisy, costochondritis and more. Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include blood tests and imaging tests. Treatment depends on the underlying cause.
