Ligaments stabilize and connect the bones. Laxity of ligaments occurs when the ligaments are too loose. This condition may affect ligaments all over the body. It is usually caused due to medical conditions such as hypermobility syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Marfan syndrome, osteogenesis imperfecta, and Down’s syndrome. It could also be caused due to bony dysplasia, osteoarthritis and injuries.

Symptoms may appear in or around the joints and include pain, numbness, tingling, muscle spasms, frequent injuries, joint dislocation, hypermobility and joints that click.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include genetic and imaging tests.
Treatment is not always required, but if it causes pain- physical therapy may help. Sometimes, surgical procedures may be needed.
