What is it?

The upper back is affected by this condition. The upper back is rounded, making it appear hunched over. Sometimes it is referred to as Scheuermann's disease.

Some of the vertebrae in the upper back grow slower when a child has Scheuermann's disease. When the vertebrae stack up, the spine curves, causing the back to round out.

Signs & symptoms

The back is rounded and hunched. It is sometimes difficult to see the rounding. It can also be more noticeable at other times. Kids can't straighten their curve by standing up.

Back pain. About half of kids with Scheuermann's kyphosis have back pain.

Diagnosis

Scheuermann's kyphosis is diagnosed by:

Observe the spine as the child stands, bends at the waist, and lies down

Measure and assess the curve with X-rays

Treatment

Observation. There may be no need to treat kyphosis if the rounding of the back won't cause any problems.

Brace for the back.

Physiotherapy. Sometimes strengthening the back and core muscles can help support the spine better.

Surgical procedure. Usually, surgery isn't necessary. For severe cases causing pain or breathing difficulties, doctors may recommend a spinal fusion.
