What is it?

The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Urethral injury may be caused due to blunt trauma, such as a car accident or a fall, by penetrating trauma, due stabbing or gunshot and during surgical procedure. Surgical procedures in which the urethra might be injured include hysterectomy, colectomy, cesarean section, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair and more.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms may include abdominal and flank pain, urine leaking, fever and hematuria.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include imaging tests such as urography, CT, or surgery to identify the injury.


Treatment

Treatment depends on the extent of the injury. For mild injuries, urethral stent or urine drainage tube might be enough but for major injuries, a surgery is required.
