Shoulder impingement is a very common cause of shoulder pain, resulting from rubbing or catching nearby tissues and bones as you lift your arm. Basically, it affects the rotator cuff tendon, which connects the muscles around your shoulder joint to the top of your arm.

Signs & symptoms

The onset of shoulder impingement can be sudden or gradual. There are several symptoms associated with this condition: Upper and outer shoulder pain Lifting your arm, especially above your head, causes more pain Sleep can be affected by pain or aching at night Weakness

Diagnosis

In order to determine if movement worsens the pain, the doctor examines your shoulder and asks you to move your arm differently. You may be given treatment advice by your doctor or referred to a physiotherapist. No scans will be required at the hospital.

Treatment

Shoulder exercises It is possible to relieve shoulder pain with steroid injections if rest and exercise fail to do so. If other treatments have not worked, a subacromial decompression may be an option
