Selective IgA deficiency is an immune system condition in which the person lacks immunoglobulin A, while all other immunoglobulin levels are normal. Immunoglobulin A is a protein that is part of the immune system. This condition is quite common, and most of the patients that have IgA deficiency do not suffer from recurrent infections. On the other hand, there are patients who have significant illnesses. People with selective IgA deficiency tend to suffer from other autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease.
Diagnosis of selective IgA deficiency is suspected when there are recurrent infections, autoimmune diseases, chronic diarrhea or a combination of these conditions. To establish the diagnosis, blood tests should demonstrate undetected IgA levels.
Some people who have selective IgA deficiency do not even know they have it because they don’t have any symptoms at all. Others might experience recurrent infections, chronic diarrhea, allergies and asthma.
There is no cure for IgA deficiency. treatment is by treating symptoms, for example- treating recurrent infections with antibiotics.
