Hypoparathyroidism is a condition characterized by production of low levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH helps regulate the balance of calcium and phosphorus in the body. Hypoparathyroidism causes low levels of calcium and an increase in phosphorus levels. Hypoparathyroidism may be caused due to neck surgery, autoimmune attack on the parathyroid tissue, hereditary hypoparathyroidism or radiation therapy to the neck area.
