What is it?

Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD) is a part of a group of personality disorders from cluster B- which are considered as emotional and dramatic personalities. For people with histrionic personality disorder, their self esteem depends on others approval. They strongly want to be noticed by others. and can act in a dramatic or inappropriate manner to get others' attention. The disorder is more common in women and it becomes evident by early adulthood. The cause of the disorder is yet fully understood but it is sought that both genetics and environment contribute to the formation of the disorder. Histrionic personality disorder has a tendency to run in families- a fact that suggests that a genetic susceptibility might exist, alongside specific role models.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of histrionic personality disorder is made with the help of the DSM-5 that states that a person should answer 5 or more of the following signs or symptoms to be diagnosed:
-Discomfort in situations in which you're not the center of attention
-Interaction with others that's often characterized by inappropriate sexually seductive or provocative behavior
-Rapidly shifting and shallow expression of emotion

Of course, diagnosis can only be done if there is no other reason explaining the symptoms.

Treatment

Usually, people suffering from histrionic personality disorder do not seek help, making treatment plans difficult. Psychotherapy is usually the treatment of choice. In the meetings, the therapist will try to uncover the motivations and worries linked to the person's behavior or thoughts, and help the patient choose an adaptable coping mechanism. Medications are sometimes used to treat depression or anxiety, if those co-occur.
