Histoplasmosis is an infection caused when breathing spores of a fungus spread by contaminated soil. Most people who get infected with histoplasmosis will never develop symptoms and will be unaware of it. Infants and immunocompromised people may get a more severe variety of the disease and could affect any body part.
Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, dry cough, chest discomfort, joint pain, rash and fatigue.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include searching for evidence of the disease in lung secretions, blood, urine, biopsy from lung tissue and bone marrow.
Usually there is no need to treat histoplasmosis but in a more severe or disseminated disease antifungal drugs are given.
