Halitosis

by Alike Medical Team ∙ Updated on June 13, 2023

General

Halitosis refers to bad breath that may be caused due to certain foods, health conditions or habits. Bad breath odors may vary, depending on what’s causing it. Some people are extremely sensitive and aware of their breath, while others do not. Food breaks down into particles and may get stuck around the teeth and gums. The bacteria which connect to the particles as well as certain foods that enter the bloodstream and get into the lungs may cause these odors. Poor dental hygiene and tobacco use may also cause bad breath. A dry mouth can contribute to bad breath due to decreased amount of saliva. There are certain medications that may cause bad breath, infections, nose and throat conditions such as tonsillitis, and some cancers, metabolic disorders, gastroesophageal reflux and in children it’s important to look for foreign bodies in the nostrils. Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and dental examination. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include mouth rinses, toothpaste, dental diseases treatment, flossing, avoiding tobacco use, adjusting the diet, and getting a new toothbrush regularly.
