Metatarsalgia refers to a condition which is characterized by inflammation of the ball of the foot. It is common in people who participate in activities like running and jumping, people who have foot deformities and those who wear shoes that don’t fit them well.

Symptoms include sharp pain, burning pain, in the side of the sole behind the toes. The pain worsens during standing, running, flexing or walking, toes pain and numbness of the toes.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include an X-ray of the foot.
Treatment includes resting, changing to more suitable shoes, and using a metatarsal pad. In rare cases, surgery is needed.
