Dyshormogenetic goiter

Pendred syndrome is a rare genetic condition that causes early hearing loss and in some cases goiter, an enlarged thyroid gland. Hearing loss if oten bilateral. It could also affect the vestibular system that controls balance, but usually their balance does not interfere. Some will start walking later than other babies.

Symptoms include hearing loss in childhood, and goiter.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include genetic testing, and MRI or CT of the inner ear.
Pendred syndrome does not have a cure, but treatment may include hearing aids, and a cochlear implant.
