Conjuctivitis, also known as pink eye, is an inlammtion or infection of the conjuctiva, the membrane that covers the eye ball. It is caused due to viral or bacterial infection. Other reasons may icnlude allergies, chemical splash in the eyes, foreign objects, and in babies it could be the result of blocked tear duct.

Symptoms may include redness, itchiness, a greety feeling, discharge and tearing in one or both eyes.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and eye examination. Rarely, a culture will be taken from the eye.
Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include artificial tears, cold and warm compresses, antihistamines for allergies or mast cell stabilizers.
