by Alike Medical Team ∙ Updated on June 13, 2023
This group contains additional names: - Tethered cord syndrome - Congenital Spine Deformities
Congenital anomalies of spinal cord, or congenital spine deformities, are disorders of the spine that develop prior to birth. The vertebrae do not form correctly in early fetal development and may cause structural problems within the spine and spinal cord. These deformities vary from mild to severe and may cause other problems if left untreated.
66 people with Congenital anomalies of spinal cord are on Alike.
Several symptoms may accompany spinal cord anomalies, including: - Tilted pelvis - Gait or difficulty walking - Breathing problems - Abnormal curvature or twisting in the back
There are several imaging tests used to diagnose spinal anomalies: - X-Rays - useful for showing structural deformities - MRI - the most frequently used for imaging of the spine in adults as the spinal canal and its content can be analysed. - CT Scans - the preferred method for assessing localized bony abnormalities.
Nonoperative treatment options are recommended before surgery is considered, in most cases of congenital anomalies of spinal cord. The treatment options include pain medication, braces and physical therapy. In cases when the deformity is severe, or worsens, a surgery may be considered.
