Compartment syndrome
by Alike Medical Team ∙ Updated on June 13, 2023
Compartment syndrome is a life threatening condition which happens when there is too much pressure inside a muscle group with blood vessels and nerves, called a compartment. The membrane that wraps the compartment is called fascia, and it does not expand. Thus, when the pressure increases, damage to the muscles, blood vessels and nerves inside the compartment. If blood vessels are damaged, this condition might cause necrosis, tissue death. Compartment syndrome is caused due to major injury to the tissue.

Symptoms of compartment symptoms include severe and unproportional pain. The pain gets worse when you stretch the area, and doesn’t get better with pain relievers. Advanced compartment syndrome symptoms include numbness or paralysis.
Compartment syndrome is diagnosed upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include imaging tests.
Compartment syndrome is treated with surgery to open up the fascia to decrease pressure.
