Cleft or bifid uvula is a condition of a split uvula. The uvula is the dangling piece you can see in the back of the mouth, a part of the soft palate. Cleft uvula may cause problems while eating, drinking and speaking. It could be hereditary, and may also be caused due to environmental factors such as smoking, several medications and diabetes.
Symptoms may include food regurgitation from the nose, nasal-sounding speech, and recurrent ear infections.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from physical examination, and it does not have to be present from birth, since it continues to grow.
Sometimes cleft uvula does not require any treatment. In other cases, speech therapy may be advised. When symptoms are severe, surgery may be required.
