Chronic tonsillitis

The tonsils are two tissue pieces which are located at the back of the throat and help fight infections. When the tonsils get infected it is called tonsillitis and when it lasts longer than two weeks it is called chronic tonsillitis. Tonsillitis may be caused due to viral or bacterial infection. It is more common in adolescents and adults.

People who have chronic tonsillitis may have sore throat, enlarged tonsils, bad breath and enlarged lymph nodes.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include a swab test.
If the tonsils are caused due to bacteria, antibiotics may be needed. Other treatments may include pain relievers and in some cases, tonsillectomy is advised.
