What is it?

Stridor is a high-pitched, whistling sound that is heard when something interrupts the airflow. When the voice box, the larynx, or trachea are blocked, stridor may be heard. It is more common in children and could be either inspiratory, expiratory or biphasic stridor. Causes for stridor in adults include an object blocking the airway, swelling of the throat, airway trauma, surgeries, being intubated, inhaling smoke, vocal cord paralysis, bronchitis, tonsillitis, epiglottitis, tracheal stenosis, tumors, and abscesses. In children, laryngomalacia is usually the cause of stridor.
