Rhinitis refers to a condition which is characterized by inflammation of the nose’s inner lining. Chronic rhinitis lasts longer than 4 weeks. Chronic rhinitis may be allergic or non-allergic, in which the body’s immune system is not involved. Triggers for non-allergic rhinitis include air pollution, tobacco smoke or certain odors. Allergic rhinitis may be triggered by pets, dust mites, mold, pollen, and cocroaches residue.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms may include runny nose, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, ears and throat, sneezing, post nasal drip, cough, headaches, and bluish discoloration under the lower eyelids.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include an allergy test.

Treatment

Treatment includes lifestyle changes and avoiding the trigger, if it’s known. Medications may include antihistamines, decongestants, nasal sprays, corticosteroid nasal spray, anticholinergic nasal sprays and sublingual or injections of immunotherapy.
