Chilblains refers to a condition which is characterized by inflammation of small blood vessels in response to cold. It usually gets better within one to three weeks.
Symptoms include red area on the skin of the hand and feet, itching, blistering, swelling of the skin, burning sensation and color changes.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include skin biopsy to rule out other conditions.
Treatment includes keeping the hands and feet warm and dry and avoiding exposure to cold weather. Medications may include nifedipine and topical steroids.
