The bladder neck consists of muscles that connect the bladder to the urethra . When those muscles relax, the urine flows through the urethra. When there is a blockage of the bladder neck, urinary problems may develop, leading to complications such as urinary tract infections, kidney damage, bladder diverticula or long term incontinence.
Causes for bladder neck blockage include an enlarged prostate (making this condition more common in older men), previous prostate surgery or radiation, and weakened vaginal wall for women.
