What is it?

A benign skin lesion is a non-cancerous skin growth. It usually has a symmetrical shape and color, it grows slowly or doesn’t grow at all, and it doesn’t bleed spontaneously.
There are many types of benign skin neoplasms, and they are usually classified according to the cell from which they were originally created. Some examples include hemangiomas, hypertrophic or keloid scars, warts, seborrheic keratosis, dermatofibromas, and nevi.

Signs & symptoms

Benign skin neoplasms rarely cause any symptoms; however, they can be cosmetically bothersome.

Diagnosis

Your doctor will examine the lesion thoroughly, making sure there are no suspicious signs that indicate a cancerous potential.
He or she will ask about your medical history, daily sun exposure and history of skin malignancies in your family.
If no suspicious signs have appeared on examination, a benign tumor can be diagnosed.
Your doctor might refer you to a 8biopsy*, in which a part of your lesion or all of it will be extracted and examined under the microscope, in order to reach a definite diagnosis.

Treatment

Most benign skin lesions do not require treatment and just need to be monitored for any changes that might appear over time.
If the lesion bothers you esthetically, it can often be managed with simple procedures, such as:
-Cryotherapy- using very cold liquid nitrogen to destroy the lesion
-Electrosurgery- using electrical energy to remove the skin growth
-Excision
