What is it?

Benign neoplasm of soft tissue, or benign soft tissue tumors are tumors that can grow within and between muscles, ligaments, nerves, and blood vessels. These tumors differ greatly in their characteristics and appearance. Lipoma, angiolipoma, fibroma, benign fibrous histiocytoma, neurofibroma, schwannoma, neurilemmoma, hemangioma, giant cell tumor of tendon sheath, and myxoma are the most common benign soft tissue tumors. Usually, it is not an inherited condition. The most common benign neoplasm of soft tissue is lipoma which is growth of fat tissue under the skin. Like other benign neoplasms of soft tissue, it may appear on many locations- torso, arms, shoulders, neck and more.

Signs & symptoms

Benign soft tissue tumors may sometimes cause pain, but also may not. Usually it is a painless bulge which grows slowly over the years.

Diagnosis

Benign soft tissue tumors are usually diagnosed on a physical examination followed by MRI scans which can help identify the location and internal characteristics. Sometimes, a biopsy must be taken to examination in order to confirm the lesion is benign.

Treatment

Treatment may include surgical removal, steroid injection, orthotic devices, physical therapy, radiation therapy, laser surgery and others.
