What is it?

A benign, non-cancerous, colonic (large intestine) tumor is a type of growth that will not spread outside your intestine to the rest of your body.
There are many types of non- cancerous colonic tumors. The most common type is a polyp. A polyp is an abnormal growth of cells that can be either flat ("sessile") or mushroom shaped ("pedunculated"). It is very common, and usually does not cause any symptoms. In some cases, a polyp can evolve into a cancerous tumor, so it is usually removed.
Other, less common, types of benign tumors are hamartomas and lipomas.

Signs & symptoms

Most benign tumors do not cause any signs and symptoms.
Some tumors can cause belly pain, constipation, diarrhea or blood in your feces.

Diagnosis

Routine screening tests are important for finding the polyps before they become cancerous and removing them.
Screening methods include:
- Colonoscopy- the doctor inserts a long, thin, flexible, lighted tube to check for polyps inside your colon and remove them if possible.
- Stool tests to detect a small and invisible amount of blood in your stool, which can be a sign of a tumor.
- CT Colonography produces an image of your entire colon, which is displayed on a computer screen for your doctor to analyze.

Treatment

If the polyp was found in a colonoscopy, your doctor will remove it in the same exam. If the polyp was found in a different screening test, you will need to do a colonoscopy in order to remove it.
After a polyp was found and removed, you will probably need to have a colonoscopy every few years to check for more polyps.
Depending on the type and number of polyps found, the doctor might recommend additional genetic testing.
