Babesiosis is a disease caused by a tick called babesia. It is common in northeastern and Midwestern United States and parts of Europe, and sporadic throughout the rest of the world. The infection occurs with a bite by an infected tick, an infected blood transfusion or congenitally.
In many cases, there are no symptoms at all. Babesisis symptoms may include hemolytic anemia symptoms such as fatigue, fever, chills, sweats and thrombocytopenia. Other less common symptoms may include headache, muscle pain, loss of appetite, dry cough, joint pain, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, abdominal pain, pink eye, photophobia, weight loss, depression and others.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include serologic testing for antibodies and PCR tests from the blood.
Treatment includes a combination of atovaquone and azithromycin.
