Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease (AIED) is a rare condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the inner ear, leading to progressive hearing loss and other symptoms. The exact cause of AIED is not fully understood, but it is believed to be an autoimmune disorder, in which the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells in the body.

Symptoms of AIED may include: * Gradual hearing loss, typically affecting both ears * Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) * Vertigo or dizziness * Sensitivity to loud noises * Feeling of pressure or fullness in the ear
Diagnosis of AIED may involve a variety of tests, including hearing tests, blood tests to check for autoimmune antibodies, and imaging tests such as MRI or CT scans. A diagnosis of AIED may be challenging, as the symptoms can be similar to those of other conditions, and there is no definitive test for AIED.
Treatment for AIED may involve medications that suppress the immune system, such as corticosteroids, which can reduce inflammation and slow the progression of hearing loss. Other medications, such as methotrexate, may also be used to suppress the immune system. In some cases, a cochlear implant may be recommended for individuals with severe hearing loss.
