Allodynia is a type of neurotic pain. People who have it are very sensitive to touch and may feel pain as a result of things that usually do not cause pain to other people such as combing the hair. They may also be sensitive to changes in temperature or to gentle touch or pressure upon the skin. Causes for allodynia may include shingles infection, diabetes, fibromyalgia, migraines, medications such as chemotherapy and opioids, nutritional deficits, and nerve injury. Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include blood tests, electromyogram and quantitative sensory testing. There are some things that could be done to alleviate allodynia such as antiepileptic drugs, triptans, crems, lotions, psychological therapy, biofeedback, physical therapy, and nerve block.
