Acute flaccid myelitis

Acute flaccid myelitis refers to a rare condition which is characterized by sudden weakness and loss of muscle tone. It is more common in young children, a few weeks after they suffer from a respiratory illness or a viral infection caused by enterovirus.

Symptoms may include sudden arm and leg weakness, sudden loss of muscle tone, sudden loss of reflexes, difficulty moving the eyes, drooping eyelids, and difficulty swallowing.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include brain MRI, lab tests and nerve check.
There is no specific treatment for acute flaccid myelitis, but some treatments may include IVIG and corticosteroids.
