Acute bronchospasm

Bronchospasm is when the airway’s muscles get narrowed, resulting in less oxygen received by the body. When someone experiences bronchospasm he or she may feel like they can’t get enough air, it could be a terrifying experience. It is more common in people with allergies, asthma, COPD, emphysema and different lung diseases.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms include chest pain, difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing, fatigue and dizziness.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include lung function tests, pulse oximetry, arterial blood gas tests, and imaging tests.

Treatment

Treatment may include bronchodilators and in some cases steroids.
