TW SI To my friends assigned female at birth: Is it normal to become severely suicidal during your period? Or before? I already struggle with suicidal thoughts and ideation, but truly it becomes so unbearable. Paired with this, I experience extremely painful (i doubt it is a normal amount of pain) cramps and sometimes a very heavy flow, if that is relevant. Thanks from a very agitated trans man (who has lost access to testosterone and thus regained the cursed cycle.)

Fellow afab person with bpd and other mood disorders here but unfortunately yes especially with those with bpd, I believe the around 40-60% of people with bpd experience heightened SI before or during their period or even after, pms already brings about normal mood swings due to the hormone shifts but if you already have a mood disorder or a disorder that affects your mood it can heighten your symptoms even more. You are definitely not alone, I’ve been through times the Si and also the fact my cycles are so heavy and painful at times as well was all so bad I almost attempted or thought there’d be no way I could survive it it’s like everything goes black and you can’t remember “ah, I’m on my period things are heightened right now”. But that’s truly what I have to keep reminding myself during those times, it feels completely out of control and unbearable now but there is always a end to it you won’t be in your cycle forever and your symptoms will likely have far more mercy on you soon. Wishing you all the best <3

It's common to experience mood swings and increased emotional distress during your period due to hormonal changes, which can be labeled as premenstrual dysphoric disorder. However, severe suicidal thoughts are not normal and should be addressed with a medical professional immediately. Some individuals have found that hormonal birth control helps to manage these symptoms. It's also important to remember that these feelings are temporary and linked to hormonal fluctuations.
