What does your frustration and sensory overload feel like when you have a cold? How would you describe it and how do you cope? Having a stuffy/leaky nose makes me so upset that I cry and freak out and feel like I need to peel my skin off and just leave this body, because I cannot handle it, it’s too much.

ME TOO god it’s awful. Having covid was nothing compared to colds for me. It’s just so much, feeling tired and gross and constantly having to drink ginger ale to distract me from mucus LITERALLY IN MY THROAT making me feel nauseous. IT’S HORRID

My mood takes a massive hit. I'm way more moody and short-tempered, lethargic, complaining and lacking motivation that you might expect from an NT with a cold because I am overwhelmed by all the sensations of tiredness, stuffy nose, sore throat, headaches etc. I honestly have to treat myself like I'm more ill than "just a cold" and be extra kind to myself. Lots of cold and flu meds, steaming, staying in pjyamas and resting as much as I can so that I can shake off the cold quickly. Engage shamelessly and self indulgently in nostalgic hobbies and "childish" special interests bc I need the comfort. And if you can, try to distract from the sensations in your body, if you have a video game or a movie etc. that totally absorbs you :)

Some people with autism experience frustration and sensory overload when they have a cold, describing it as feeling upset, wanting to cry, and feeling like they need to escape their body due to the overwhelming sensations. To cope, some individuals suggest taking hot showers, drinking hot cocoa, using warm clothes, and wrapping themselves in a fuzzy blanket.
