Im 40 and share a council house with my my, of which i pay the full rent. So with mothers day coming up soon, I was talking to mum about it. I was annoyed when she said she expected loads of money spent on her, knowing im struggling with my finances. I help her out with gardening and maintenance of the house etc, and she has lent me money a few times recently as I've got debts I'm paying off. i have got her some bits and spent a fair bit, but my values are its the thought behind the present and not just the present itself. Am I just being out of order?

Sounds like you're dealing with someone with BPD/toxic personality. It's a very difficult illness to handle and normally cutting ties with the person is the best solution. I know it sounds extreme but I've looked extensively into this, went through a divorce, etc and watched many many videos on this topic. I may not be an expert but there isn't much you can do. You also rely on her to react positively too much. Just do what you can and leave it at that. If they are unhappy and unappreciative of your actions, you just show no reaction. They'll get bored of your real quick.
