I've got a question/ need advice. My brother recently got diagnosed with autism, he has had it his whole life and I always knew. He is 13 and is egotistical and has no empathy or sympathy, and just a jerk. He has always been like this. Will he ever grow out of it? Or will he always be like this?

He will probably always be like this unless he and all the adults in his life, work with him to fix it. This probably has nothing to do with autism though, mostly with how he was raised to begin with. Even though autism is a spectrum and it causes people to act differently, most autistic people do know how to be kind or nice.

I definitely had/have some behaviors that make me *seem* like a jerk. Uncontrolled emotional outbursts, rejection sensitivity, a huge superiority complex, and just generally not knowing how to communicate. I might communicate "you seem tired, are you okay?" in terms of how it impacts *me* - ex. "you haven't been hanging out with me enough." Or, I might get frustrated trying to communicate to NT people and decide that they were "dumb"/not worth the effort. It's not something I grew out of, exactly, so much as I realized I couldn't function without those people and started actively trying to modify my behavior.

@WizardOfWardrobe Yeah I gotcha. Maybe my brother will also modify his behavior in his own time.

Although unlike other people in the comments I don’t think something else is going on. 13 year olds are just mean, amplified by the fact that he probably hasn’t always been held accountable for that. 😅

@Sydie_Bear Yeah not a good age. BUT he has always been like that, which is odd. Well he is always in trouble for doing something he isn't supposed to do, he just doesn't care and will keep doing it.

No he will not grow out of it unless he is taught out of it, jerkiness is usually a learned thing, my low empathy friends worked very hard to not be jerks! I babysat a kid like this, because of his autism nobody ever really taught him to not be a jerk and just let him do his own thing and now he’s pretty selfish and mean as he gets older. I know some of my peers who struggle find they have soft spots for some stuff, for one of them it’s old people and animals, for one it’s kids, for one it’s girls in general. Part of it is probably also just his age. 13 year olds are just…kinda mean…even if they don’t try to be kids that age are just kind of rude! You kinda learn the whole not to be a jerk thing around then

@Sydie_Bear Oh so it's like a learned behavior that he will have to change! Yeah a very awkward age. I don't think he will grow out of this to be honest. My parents won't put effort into or believe that it will help. Thanks for being very wise!

low empathy is an autistic trait but low empathy does not make someone a jerk. autistic ppl with low empathy can still have sympathy, and be kind and nice to others. sounds like your brother has something else going on.

@zellarius Yeah that seems to be what everyone is agreeing on!

This sounds more like something else. Autism does not cause people to act like that most of the time.

@Redvelninja OH okay I was told that his behavior was caused by autism. Any idea why else he is like that?

@shoe no I think some of the behaviour does stem from autism but are caused by being allowed to be horrible. Some autistic people are not nice but a lot of us are really nice.
