Looking for a therapist who specializes in Dissociative Disorders

Hello I just joined this app after seeing some ads for it. I'm looking to get back into therapy. I was told I no longer needed it about a year or two ago but my Dr informed me that my therapist shouldn't have made that decision for me. A lot has happened so I definitely need to get back into it. I am looking to try and get a therapist who specializes in Disociative disorders. I haven't been diagnosed but I have had dissociative episodes, lapses in periods of time, and also have shifted with at least one alter. I can hear her and she talks with me at times in the "headspace" but comes forward mostly when I myself shut down from anxiety. But it's almost like I watch her doing it. She has her own name, identity, voice, and her personality is mostly opposite of mine. I told my old therapist about my experiences and she asked her supervisor and told me that it isn't possible that I have DID because I'm aware that it's happening. Okay, maybe it's not DID. But then what is it? She didn't have the qualifications to tell me. But she just kept explaining it away as other things like "I'm glad you... think of these things in ways that help you." I doubt it was her intention but it made me feel like she thought I was lying or making it up. My alter doesn't come forward much and part of it is not feeling like she can be herself or live her own life due to having to mask and pretend to be me. Maybe it's not DID, maybe it's Other Unspecified Disociative Disorder or something. But either way, I hope to find someone who can both help me with all I'm going through and hopefully can accommodate my alter(s) (who knows there could be more I'm not aware of) and help us not have to mask. I'm sure that may not be healthy. Has anyone else dealt with dissociative disorders and finding a therapist who can help with that?

You shouldn't have been told to stop therapy. You can be in therapy for years. It's not an "event." It's a disorder. Coming from someone who has dissociative disorder. I've always "zoned" out. I can hear, but I stare into nothing basically. I'm believed to have borderline personally disorder. But please remember, all these diagnoses are just a matter of "opinion."" My personality changes completely, almost like another person. It's a struggle to deal with.

Yeah that's what my Dr said. She also mentioned that the therapist could have found she had nothing more to teach me. She was also trying to get me into group therapy but I wasn't seeing that to as a good option for me. I would always zone out too. So interesting that that is a sign of dissociation. Everyone seems to be different so honestly the DSM-5 needs to be more flexible for other cases. Or at the very least, have an umbrella term for those experiencing things that go along with it. I believe that's where dissociation and OSDD or whatever comes in. Thanks for sharing your experience.

There are other dissociative disorders than those, it's possible you could have one of those or a different one. I wouldn't recommend trusting the opinion of someone that isn't a specialist or at least someone who is well educated on the disorders and has some experience with them. We haven't been able to find anyone who can help us yet because we live in the middle of nowhere, but we plan to find a specialist one day when we get a chance. Good luck on your journey and feel free to message us if you need information on DID/OSDD or just someone to talk to :)

She was hesitant at first because labels can be harmful. But now she just wants to know what's going on with us like I do. Labels can be harmful but they also provide understanding and a sense of not being alone or crazy. I'm hoping we can find a specialist who will help her feel more welcome. Because when she rarely does come forward, she keeps saying she should do it more but doesn't due to a lot of factors. Whatever she wants to do, I just don't want her or any others there may be feeling left behind or feeling they have to pretend to be me to make it look as if we're a normally functioning human being. That's where understanding and an actual diagnosis to tell others comes in. Thank you for that offer. Hopefully you're able to get to a specialist soon. Best of luck on your journey too!

the therapist should have owned up and admitted she personally couldn't help you anymore and transferred you to someone else.
