where are you and how long did you wait between first referral and your diagnosis? I'm interested in the difference in wait times in different areas of different countries.

@hello.its.me I’ve never been in a psych ward but almost was due to my schizo affective, still took years to get diagnosed with ADHD, 2017-2023 is how long I waited for that. They basically told me I also have autism too but won’t diagnose me unless I have a good reason for it, even though they could start that process if they wanted to. But if you have OCPD and are told to go to a psychiatrist in the US they will diagnose you first chance they get.

It depends on urgency and if your doctors think a diagnosis will benefit you even if they know you have it and just haven’t been diagnosed

@Jelly_JellyFish my doctors and psychiatrists sent the referral two years ago, its out of their hands now. In the UK, the only way you gey fast tracked for a nrurodivergnecy dx is if you are in a psych ward. Otherwise you just join the waiting list. I've been on it two years now. :(

I'm in the UK, I was referred at 16 and then I think my referral got lost between the child and adult service so I never got a diagnosis. I'm now trying to get one as an adult and the waiting list is currently 4 years on the NHS.

@bonnyblue I was also referred when 16. I am now 18 and a half and still waiting!

6 months. But it was mostly my fault. I was hesitant. I just could not believe that I had Autism. I knew I was struggling. I just did not know why. The referral was put in at the beginning of those 6 months, but I did not make an appointment for another 2 months and went 4 months later.

@K9 that's really quick compared to England. I could've taken longer for my referral but I was insistant and now it's been two years since and I've still not got a date for my diagnostic assessment.

I'm in Scotland, I had a mental health crisis and got referred to Psychology self-help by my doctor. That took 2 months, and they realised I need full on psychology help. After many incidents and 6 months later, I had one on one Psychology help. My Autism is very obvious and after about 2 months with the psychologist they fast tracked me for an Autism diagnosis. Keep in mind I've had many breakdowns and ideation. So about a year in total.

I'm in London I waited for 2 and a half years, I think I would have waited for much longer if I wouldn't have been insisting constantly. The wait made my anxiety worse.

@juan.ba definitely agree with the anxiety. I'm starting uni in less than two weeks and knowing I'll have to prove my need for accommodations etc rather than being to just ask and get is stressing me out. I just want people to have some understanding without me having to explain everything all over again. I have already chased it all up when they moved me from camhs to adults but they said the wait could be longer now I am older (I'm in East sussex atm)

I was kinda unlucky. I live in SE Wisconsin, took me 8 months between the referral and actually getting the diagnosis.

@DitsyDiabetic that's quick compared to here in England! I've been waiting two years now and not heard anything :(

I currently live in the US, and I was acctually diagnosed twice. Once when I was about 10 years old, and again when I was 15 when I switched doctors and psychiatrists because of moving and my parents not beliveing I had it in the first place. When I got my referall from my primary doctor to my psychiatrist, I acctually went as soon as I could and was able to do some screenings and that lead to my autism diagnosis specifically. So all and all probubly took about 1-2 months for the second diagnosis.

@Viynnyie wow that's quick! I'm in South East England and its been two years since my referral and meeting with a psychologist and I'm still waiting on an assessment!

@hello.its.me Yeah I'm one of the luckier ones in the means of time, but I aslo rushed myself to get to appointments and I was refured to a bunch of diffrent places but I managed to find a place that works for me

The responses vary greatly. One person mentioned that it took them about 4 months to get a diagnosis, most of which was waiting for a sleep study. Another individual stated that their ADHD assessment took two sessions of 1-2 hours each. Yet another person shared that they were diagnosed as a child within a couple of months. However, one person mentioned that they had been waiting for almost 2 years since their referral without hearing anything. The specific locations of these individuals are not provided in the context.
