So I am frustrated because my dentist has been acting somewhat ableist. I have always had a hard time with getting into routine brushing my teeth, really I am trying my hardest but I always either forget or I just don’t have the mental or physical energy for it. I told him it’s hard due to executive dysfunction and he just kind of brushed it off like I was *trying* to make things more difficult. I explained I’m aiming for once a day right now (as it’s a more reasonable goal for me at the moment) and he starts yelling at me about how I need to start doing it twice a day or I’m wasting all of this money on the dental work, and I get where he’s coming from but I just wish he understood. He’s from a different culture and I don’t think he takes mental disorders as seriously as he should, as a healthcare provider. It just makes me feel like garbage and frustrates me as well, and he’s good at dentistry and all but I just wish he was more open minded. I don’t have the time or energy rn to find a whole new dentist, so does anyone have any suggestions of good ways to cope with this or better ways to communicate with him? Also any tips for getting myself into a routine of teeth brushing would be nice as well, as reminders don’t work for me cause I usually just ignore them. I just feel I’ve tried so much at this point and I’m sick of being treated like this for my struggles.

Totally understand you I'm the same way I either get distracted and forget to do it or don't have the energy and it's cause of my ADHD.

You could go the direct approach and say you have these legitimate issues and your trying your best but ultimately it's a symptom. Or you could try to explain how invalidated and frustrated you feel when you see him. Is there someone else who could find you a new dentist? Or you could even ask if the practice you're at has another dentist there you could switch to?

I have autism and have struggled with teeth brushing for years and years due to sensory issues and executive dysfunction. I am missing about half at this point, either broken or pulled bc of excruciating pain. I won’t even smile anymore bc I’m too self conscious and i get called a meth head ALL THE F*****G TIME and i HATE that. I want to get implants but they’re soooooooo expensive….. Tl;dr sorry this comment wasn’t helpful, but I’m glad to know I’m not the only one, and i kinda needed to vent about that. Thanks.

This might sound dumb but I recently found an app by the Pokemon company. Called Pokemon smiles it's a cute simple game that tells you where to brush your teeth and you catch a pokemon by brushing. You can choose to brush from 1-3 minutes. It is a thing for children but it think it's cute and makes brushing my teeth a bit more entertaining.

I took my toothbrush to the shower! I had a hard time remembering or find the energy to brush my teeth but I'm self conscious about being sweaty. I just brush my teeth in the shower as part of my routine. It helps make it one chore instead of two separate ones. A handheld water picks helps too. But they take some getting used to. Chewing gum can help if you've forgotten to brush your teeth but be careful not to eat too much of the fake sugar/sugar substitutes. I remember a case of a flight attendant that went through packs of gum a day to clear her ears and got sick because of that.

It's been a struggle for me too. They are most likely not trying to be ableist. They just want you to have healthy teeth. Your ADHD can make things harder, but it's not impossible. We just need to find a different more interesting way to do things.

@Ash.G yeah I mean I know you’re right, it’s just frustrated not feeling understood. I just wish they’d work with me to find something that helps instead of just yelling at me tho

@katitomato I understand that, I felt frustrated too most of my childhood.

One way to cope with your dentist's attitude is to remind yourself that you're doing your best and working on improving your dental hygiene. To better communicate with him, you could try explaining your struggles in a different way or ask if there's a specific technique he recommends for building a routine. For establishing a teeth brushing routine, consider using a fun-flavored toothpaste, getting a colorful toothbrush, or placing your toothbrush and toothpaste in a visible spot in the bathroom as a reminder. Remember, you're not alone in your struggles, and it's important to be patient with yourself as you work towards improvement.
