How do y'all handle extreme ableism from your families?? Just got told that autistic people can't be surgeons. By my own grandmother.

I find it’s easier to handle it from old people because I tell myself that they were exposed to too much lead in their life to be considerate of other people to be honest. As awful as that sounds to say. But long term lead exposure can make people more irritable and moody, so I just tell myself it’s because they grew up with lead in their everything LMAO

It's easier for me to ignore it from older people because, even when I was little, it was drilled in that being disabled was shameful, and those that are are either inspiration or babies. Older people tend to have had that drilled in for longer, with less people to get it out, and less of an ability to get it out. So, while I'll only tolerate it to a point, I imagine it like I'm talking to a brick wall and I'm just scribbling my defiance on it, even if I don't say anything. Might only work for me, though

Passive aggressive comments that lean a little too much into aggressive because I'm sick of their shit

Ignore them. And tell them that autistic people shouldn’t be grandmothers either. But them belittling you won’t stop you from being a better one than them. Despite you also being a surgeon. 😜

I usually just ignore it. my family makes a lot of jokes at my expense. they call me stupid and make fun of my speech and fine motor difficulties. they repeat my stutter at me. it's annoying but if I ignore them they stop
