How does one cope with severe mental illness while being dirt poor? I have a dead end job that doesn’t make ends meet, but it’s all I’m capable of holding down considering the severity of my symptoms. I feel so stuck, like there’s no way out. Being so impoverished is making my mental state infinitely worse, and my rich family is all selfish buttholes that could literally save my life without putting a dent in their checking account, but they won’t. Pick yourself up by your bootstraps they say. But i simply can’t. I frequently starve so i can afford my medication, simply so i don’t kms. But i feel so stuck. Does anyone have any advice?

Sheesh wished I could drive and work I'm getting 800 yet SSI pr this government people's think that's enough to live off of, like I said now I'm not lazy I can't see well or am able to drive, if I could ohh how I'd love to & the SSI 800 isn't even enough to bbn pay for my meals within a week, 😑 its just so annoying because everything is going up in prices but we get so little like I'd gladly get what ccx the useless SSI people's are making & they can take my 800 monthly, like I'd would love to travel or go to my bbn parents homeland but not even enough to buy groceries for a week..

I wish I had some advice. I have been going through the same thing. The starving yo afford medications, I feel. I actually started doordashing and then would doordash for nightly groceries.

I went homeless and moved back in with my mother. Having a place to go is nice, but I left my young children in SoCal and moved to East TN. I only work 3 days a week because its all I can handle. Just trying to save $ to get back to my kids. It sucks and I am honestly tired of being alive, even though some good things have happened in the past few days.

Apply for Social Security again but with the help of a lawyer. Most.do not charge you until you are approved. In the meantime, apply for State Disability at DHS and let them know youre trying to get SSI. Also ask DHS about low-income housing and definitely need Medicaid if you don't have it yet.

Dude this really sucks I’m so sorry. Lmk if you need help finding any resources in your area like food banks or need help applying for food stamps or anything like that. You might also qualify for state disability insurance that might cover your meds. Also, I’m not sure if you have tried this already but GoodRx might help you lower the cost of your medication. Other than that, you could try asking your doctor if there are any more affordable meds that might work for you.

Dear Ditsy! I was struck by your recent post because I’ve often wondered what would have happened to me if not been treated and able to afford the best medication available. How did generations before us deal with such devastation? The only thing that hits my mind is Faith! I strive to search for answers to such dilemmas, and the only solution is Spiritual Faith. For many that don’t make it is their lack of Faith. While I’m miles from being a scholar on this issue, If you are a Believer, this seems to be your answer! While I desire to reach into my pocket to help, this would be only temporary! However, to express my apathy for you, I have not ruled this out in all sincerity. As for your Family, it is their lack of understanding, compassion, and of utmost importance, their lack of Faith! Please know that I (at least) understand and respect your situation, and know that you're in my thoughts and prayers for me, too. Suffer from this terrible disease! Sincerely, Fid

@Fid as someone with autism who had faith forced down their throat in school everyday as a child i can tell you it made my mental health 10x worse , once i got away from that environment it improved. Don't try putting your beliefs on other people it's an individual's right to choose their own beliefs.

@Iori nowhere in my post did I put my beliefs on other people. Nor did I challenge individual rights! Rather, I was simply expressing conclusions that have worked for me. Don't have to read anything more than a suggestion that may help others. I suggest you simple turn the page!

@Iori same same and same. My whole family STILL forces it down my throat

@Fid please leave faith out of my health. I’m glad you found your “answer” but it is not mine…. I appreciate the kind words though!

One possible approach to cope with severe mental illness while being financially challenged is to seek out low-cost or free resources in your community, such as support groups, counseling services, and clinics that offer sliding scale fees. Additionally, you can explore options for financial assistance programs for medication costs. Connecting with others who share similar experiences and challenges may also provide emotional support and practical advice.
